Abstract

  • In January 2023, the combined year on year (yoy) inflation of five cities in Sumatera Utara (Sibolga, Pematangsiantar, Medan, Padangsidimpuan and Gunungsitoli) was 5.99 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 113.79. Of the five CPI cities in North Sumatra, the highest yoy inflation occurred in Gunungsitoli at 6.72 percent with a CPI of 116.79 and the lowest occurred in Medan at 5.91 percent with a CPI of 113.35.
  • Inflation occurred due to price increases as indicated by an increase in the entire price index for the expenditure group, namely the food, beverage and tobacco group by 7.08 percent; the clothing and footwear group by 4.67 percent; the housing, water, electricity and household fuel group of 1.72; equipment, tools, and household routine maintenance group of 4.60 percent; the health group by 2.04 percent; transportation group by 18.51 percent; the information, communication and financial services group by 0.28 percent; the recreation, sports and culture group by 7.07 percent; the education group by 0.56 percent; the group providing food and drink/restaurants by 3.81 percent; and the personal care and other services group of 7.88 percent.
  • The main commodities contributing to yoy inflation in January 2023 include gasoline, red chilies, rice, air freight, tomatoes, inner-city transportation, filter clove cigarettes, dencis fish, and house rent.
  • The January 2023 month to month (mtm) inflation rate was 0.91 percent and the January 2023 year to date (ytd) inflation rate was 0.91 percent.
