Abstract

In September 2023, the combined year on year (yoy) inflation for five cities in Sumatera Utara (Sibolga, Pematangsiantar, Medan, Padangsidimpuan and Gunungsitoli) was 2.15 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 114.22. Of the five CPI cities in North Sumatra, the highest yoy inflation occurred in Sibolga at 3.40 percent with a CPI of 118.68 and the lowest occurred in Gunungsitoli at 1.85 percent with a CPI of 116.87.
  • Yoy inflation occurred due to an increase in prices as indicated by the increase in all price indexes for expenditure groups, namely the food, beverage and tobacco groups by 3.76 percent; clothing and footwear group by 0.80 percent; housing, water, electricity and household fuel group at 0.97 percent; equipment, tools and routine household maintenance group of 1.17 percent; health group at 3.24 percent; transportation group at 0.49 percent; information, communication and financial services group at 0.25 percent; recreation, sports and culture group at 2.53 percent; education group of 2.83 percent; food and beverage/restaurant provision group at 1.95 percent; and the personal care and other services group at 2.66 percent.
  • The main commodities contributing to inflation yoy in September 2023 include rice, filter clove cigarettes, tomatoes, colleges/universities, garlic, gold jewelry and house rentals.
  • The month to month (mtm) inflation rate for September 2023 is 0.37 percent and the year to date (ytd) inflation rate for September 2023 is 1.29 percent.
