Abstract

  • The poverty rate in Sumatera Utara decreased by 0.80 points, from 7.99 percent in March 2024 to 7.19 percent in September 2024. This poverty rate is equivalent to 1.11 million people in September 2024, or a decrease of around 117.1 thousand people in the last six months.
  • The percentage of poor people in urban areas in September 2024 was 7.01 percent, and in rural areas it was 7.44 percent. There was a significant decrease in both urban and rural areas, by 0.92 percent and 0.64 percent respectively.
  • The Poverty Line in September 2024 was recorded at IDR 648,336/capita/month with the composition of the Food Poverty Line of IDR 495,730 (76.46%) and the Non-Food Poverty Line of IDR 152,606 or around 23.54 percent.
  • In the period March 2024-September 2024, both the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) decreased. P1 decreased from 1.227 in March 2024 to 1.084 in September 2024, while P2 decreased from 0.302 to 0.246. The decrease in P1 indicates a tendency for an increase in the average consumption expenditure of the poor who are able to follow the increase in the poverty line, or in other words, the gap between the expenditure of the poor and the poverty line is decreasing. Furthermore, P2 - which provides an overview of the distribution of consumption expenditure among the poor - the decrease in this index indicates a decrease in the inequality of consumption expenditure among the poor, or in other words, the distribution of consumption expenditure is getting better or more even.
