Abstract

  • Sumatera Utara Province poverty rate has decreased by 0.09 points, from 8.42 percent in March 2022 to 8.33 percent in September 2022. This poverty rate is equivalent to 1.26 million people in September 2022, or reduced by around 6.1 thousand soul in the last semester.
  • The percentage of poor people in September 2022 in urban areas is 8.63 percent, and in rural areas it is 7.96 percent. Both urban and rural areas experienced a decrease of 0.13 points and 0.02 points respectively when compared to March 2022.
  • The Poverty Line in September 2022 was recorded at IDR 592,025/capita/ month with a composition of the Food Poverty Line of IDR 448,623 (75.78%) and the Non-Food Poverty Line of IDR 143,402, or around 24.22 percent .
  • In the period March 2022 - September 2022, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) has increased, but on the contrary, the Poverty Severity Index (P2) has shown a decline. P1 rose from 1.365 in March 2022 to 1.411 in September 2022, while P2 decreased from 0.343 to 0.339. An increase in P1 indicates that there is a tendency for the average spending of the poor to keep up with the increase in the poverty line, or in other words, the gap between the expenditure of the poor and the poverty line decreases. Furthermore, P2 - which provides an illustration of the distribution of spending among the poor - a decrease in this index indicates reduced disparity in spending among the poor, or in other words, the distribution of expenditure is getting better or more even.
